Why I’m the Only Man in My Pilates Class

March 8, 2012 by Alan Pentz to Leadership, Program Management

Whenever I go to my Pilates class, it is me and about 30 women in the room. I have never seen another man in there. Although some people would tell me not to complain, it got me thinking about why I’m the only man in my Pilates class. One reason is that most men simply aren’t very good at it. I can personally attest to a lack of aptitude. It’s hard; it takes patience and lots of practice to be good. It actually takes a while just to get to the point where your form is good enough to reap the benefits. Most men were reared on lifting weights and running. It’s all about heaving the biggest weight, sprinting extra fast, and generally using brute force and determination to get to your goal. Pilates requires precision.  It tones and strengthens rather than bulks. So why is this post on my business blog?

Is Collaboration Creating Action or Stalling Progress?

December 12, 2011 by Sarah Agan to Program Management

I’ve been working with a client for months on an organizational realignment initiative where the leader engaged his senior team in looking at a new organizational model better aligned to their recently expanded mission. My client has made changes to the organizational model based on the team’s input and, as a result of using a collaborative process, has created a broad sense of ownership among the senior team.  During a staff meeting with the entire office, my client shared a graphical depiction of the organizational model that looked a bit different than what the leadership team had last seen.  In fact, ninety-eight percent of the information was the same as what the senior team co-created.  The leader added what he thought were minor, clarifying details. After the leader shared the graphic during the staff meeting, I was talking with a member of the leadership team who was agitated over the additions the leader made to the model.  In fact, she crumpled up the handout of the model and threw it in the trash.  This is not behavior I have seen from this person and it left me with a big question about what was really at the root of her reaction?

Eating Your Own Dog Food

January 11, 2011 by Alan Pentz to Program Management

It takes a while to get over the shock of that expression. I was halfway through a bowl of kibble before I realized it was a metaphor. It sounds unappealing, but over the last several months it has become more than an intriguing phrase for Corner Alliance. It has become a core corporate value.

We make our living in part by helping clients think and plan strategically. However, as I’ve seen at many firms, that doesn’t mean the firm itself operates under a strategic plan. Strategic planning firms don’t use strategic plans, doctors don’t go to the doctor, and politicians don’t live by the laws they pass. It’s an old story, but one we don’t accept at CA.

Turning Down the Noise

November 23, 2010 by Patrick Cropper to Program Management

I could write a ton about what I mean by "Turn Down the Noise!", but I think this video does a much better job setting the point I'm trying to make (please view it before reading the remainder of this blog entry)...
